Across Europe, the student ID is moving from a physical plastic card to a smartphone-based form. The drivers include EU regulation (eIDAS 2.0 and the EUDI Wallet), growing user expectations around mobile services, and the interest of platform and access control vendors in digitising existing processes.\n\nThe reality on the ground is fragmented. Apple already supports third-party credentials in its Secure Element; Google will announce its roadmap in autumn 2026; access control vendors are split between proprietary apps and waiting for the platforms to settle; member states roll out their own national digital identities in parallel; and the new Aliro 1.0 standard, published in February 2026, adds another building block.\n\nThe talk gives an architectural overview: where the change comes from, why native mobile wallets are currently the most pragmatic bet, what role backward compatibility with smart cards plays, and how HEIDI — a cloud platform for issuing wallet credentials to higher education institutions — keeps personal data out of the cloud by design.\n\nA practical cross-section of hardware crypto, cloud API design and EU standardisation — all in motion at once.
Robert Niederreiter is founder of Squarewave Engineering. He completed a mechatronics apprenticeship from 1995 to 1999 and then worked in several interdisciplinary roles — CNC manufacturing, injection molding, automation, software administration and development — until going independent as a software engineer in 2005. In 2013 he co-founded r2 solutions. He is the main developer of the open source conestack project (github.com/conestack), with a track record across Python and JavaScript — client/server systems, user interfaces, bus systems, sensors and communication protocols. Recent work includes HEIDI, ANA-U s cloud platform that issues student and employee credentials to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet.
